Children

Children are often the silent victims of domestic violence. At EVE we provide a safe space for children to understand their experience with violence, keep themselves safe, express their feelings and learn alternative ways of resolving conflict.

EVE provides the following programs and services for children and youth:

  • Childcare:

Provided for resident and non resident children when parent is attending groups, meeting or anytime there are adequate volunteers.

  • Domestic Violence Education Group:

Through the use of stories, discussion, activities, books and other materials, children 5 years old an up are educated about the dynamics of domestic violence and are encouraged to express their feelings involving domestic violence. Through this group children come to realize that they are not alone. They are taught non-violent ways to express anger and ways to avoid becoming involved in violent relationships themselves.

  • Children's Support Group:

Groups begin at 7:00 pm. Please call (517) 372-5572 for specific nights. Children 5 years old and up can participate in Children's Support Group. The children are encouraged to use this group for anything they want to discuss. Some issues may include exploring their feelings and personal experiences, talking about the abuse, developing safety plans and learning about realistic expectations.

  • Counseling:

EVE has counselors available for both individual and family counseling.

  • Individual Time:

Individual work with children is done primarily by interns and volunteers and includes an All About Me book, safety plan, two feelings assessments, and an exit survey. These are completed with children 5 years old and up.

  • Mentoring program:

Mentors work with youth 12 years and older to provide quality time and positive role modeling.

  • Field Trips/Special Events:

Whenever possible, special events and field trips are arranged to ensure children have positive experiences during their stay at EVE's shelter.
